This Is the Best Time to Be an Actor

29 July 2019

There has always been a sort of disparity over what acting is and what it entails. What I mean by this is that teenagers across the country get to High School and make their career decisions – and are told that acting is not a 'real' job, which is garbage. If it weren't a real job, you wouldn't get paid for the work you do. Times are changing, though – and this is the best time to be an actor!

Isn't CGI Replacing Actors?

The rumor that Computer Generated Images will eventually replace actors has been flying around for at least a decade now. Check out this news article in the Telegraph from 2014 in which they speculate how long it will take for actors to be replaced by CGI. The future, though, has turned out not to be quite so devastating for the acting world as was first speculated.

What those who posed the original question failed to take into consideration was the rise in digital media. Across the world, everyone and their sister takes a video or photo daily, posts it to social media and creates engaging content for their friends and followers. Every day, the majority of the world's population gets the chance to become a Director – even though it might be to the smallest audiences out there.

The reasons actors will not be replaced with CGI and the idea that now is the best time to be an actor are the same: accessibility.

The Rise of Digital Media Brought New Life to an Old Profession

Actors have been around since the earliest recorded times and will continue to be around until humanity ends. However, what was once considered a frivolous career choice is now becoming a career that is readily available to everyone. The rise in the availability of recording devices has led to all sorts of new film courses in universities, a growth rate in the acting sector of 12% from 2016 – 2026 (that's an above-average growth rate), and high demand for actors from minority groups.

Now that the equipment needed to make a film has fallen to price levels that your ordinary Joe can afford a plethora of short films, B movies, and student films are available online in just a few clicks. OK so they might not pay well, they might not have fringe benefits, and you might cringe when you watch it back in ten years – but every one of these films that you do gives you the chance to be spotted, to be seen by big firms and to get more work in return.

Each gig you do is exposure to the world. Moreover, right at this moment in time, the opportunities for exposure are almost endless. Like it or not, now is the best time to be an actor. With more roles, more job opportunities, and the possibility of a steadily paying career on the horizon for most Hollywood rookies – why wouldn't you choose now to pursue your lifelong dream?

Move to Hollywood, become an actor, and if anyone tells you it isn't a real job, you make sure to mail them a copy of your first paycheck.
